In making art, I have been inspired by consumer culture and have been 'reproducing' bank notes on and off since 1998. Before the present economy crisis I made the mixed media dollar note, titled 'not-a-dollar'. But I am no money expert. I do find though, art and money are so similiar, for example, both are currencies and both involve the exchange between himself/herself and the artwork. The exchange however in terms of the artwork, is an unquantifiable value as in transformations of perception.
As I became aware of how much African economies are wrapped up with actual $'s I made a one $, (George Washington, 2006) with paint, beads, bits of Tanzanian wax resist cloth and plastic on canvas. Images of transient people, icons and things like the tractor - development or western intervention, became part of my vision of the dollar. As a collaboration we, Rembrandt van Lijn, created the animated version, also titled 'not a dollar' (2009). We overlayed the Africanised bank note with an excerpt of a speech by George W. Bush on one of his economic African policies.
